Google integrated NotebookLM into the Gemini app. You can now create research notebooks directly from the Gemini chat interface and save conversation content to a notebook with a single click. That used to require opening notebooklm.google.com separately.
When the two services were separate, the biggest problem was losing flow. The cycle repeated: find information in Gemini, copy it, switch over to NotebookLM. This integration removes that step.
This post covers what changed after the integration, a feature comparison, pricing, and who actually benefits. If you're a free notebooklm.google.com user, read to the end.
— Create and access NotebookLM notebooks from within the Gemini app

Why the Two Services Were Kept Separate
NotebookLM is a research tool Google launched in 2023. The core concept is "source-grounded AI." Like a librarian, it only answers from the materials I provide. Unlike a general AI that searches the entire internet, it uses only the documents I upload as citation sources.
Gemini is a general-purpose conversational AI. It handles web search, code writing, image analysis, and more. The two services lived under the same Google roof but were entirely separate products. Even with the same account login, data was not shared between them.
Research work actually requires both services simultaneously. The pattern was to use Gemini to understand background information first, then store key sources in NotebookLM for deeper analysis. Tab switching repeated constantly. There was no way to connect the two services without copying and pasting.
A source-grounded research tool built by Google. Upload PDFs, Google Docs, web URLs, or YouTube videos as sources, and the AI answers only from within those sources. Unlike ChatGPT or Gemini, which reference the entire internet, it stays inside the material I provide. Used for summarizing papers, analyzing technical documentation, and processing long reports.
What Changed After the Integration
The Gemini app now has a NotebookLM access tab. During a conversation, selecting "Save to notebook" adds that content as a source to an existing notebook. Creating a new notebook is also possible within the app. There is no longer a need to open notebooklm.google.com separately.
Saved content syncs in real time between the two services. Adding a source in Gemini is immediately reflected in notebooklm.google.com. The reverse is also true. There is no longer any manual export or import step.
Notebook editing, citation verification, and deep analysis work is still more comfortable on the dedicated site. The Gemini integration focuses on collection and quick access. Dedicated site is better for organization and analysis. Splitting the roles between the two is the practical approach.
Three Core Features
After the integration, the NotebookLM features available in the Gemini app come down to three things. First is notebook creation and management. Browsing existing notebooks, creating new ones, and adding sources are all possible within the Gemini app. No need to open notebooklm.google.com separately.
Second is saving conversation content directly. When you find useful information while talking with Gemini, you can add it immediately as a notebook source. The process of copying text and switching tabs is gone. Saved sources are reflected in real time on both sides.
Third is running Audio Overview. You can generate a podcast-format summary based on your saved sources. It comes out as a dialogue between two AI hosts. The point is being able to absorb content by listening rather than reading long documents.
1. Explore a topic in Gemini → "AI agent framework comparison"
2. Find a useful response → click "Save to notebook"
3. Add related PDFs/URLs → upload sources from within the Gemini app
4. Go to notebooklm.google.com → deep analysis, citation verification
5. Generate Audio Overview → listen to the summary on your commute
Audio Overview — What Changes in Gemini
Audio Overview is NotebookLM's signature feature. It summarizes multiple documents in a podcast conversation format. The format of two AI hosts exchanging dialogue makes it different from a standard TTS summary. Being able to grasp content by listening rather than reading is the whole point.
Previously, it could only be run on notebooklm.google.com. Now Audio Overview can be generated from within the Gemini app as well. It became possible to go straight from sources collected in Gemini to an Audio export in one flow.
Practically useful for listening to long PDFs, technical documents, and research reports on a commute. Everything from adding sources to generating Audio happens in one app. No need to open a separate site.
Full Comparison: Old NotebookLM vs. Post-Integration
| Feature | Old NotebookLM | After Gemini Integration |
|---|---|---|
| Notebook access | Separate tab required | Within Gemini app |
| Adding sources | Manual file upload | Directly mid-conversation |
| Sync | None | Real-time |
| Audio Overview | Dedicated site only | Available in Gemini too |
| Tab switching | Required | Not needed |
| Notebook editing & citation | Dedicated site | Dedicated site recommended |
| Free access | Available | Advanced subscription required |
Pricing and Access Tiers
The NotebookLM integration inside the Gemini app is offered first to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Gemini Advanced is included in the Google One AI Premium plan. At $19.99/month (US pricing), it provides access to Gemini 1.5 Pro and other premium features.
Free users can keep using notebooklm.google.com as before. There is no difference in features. The only difference is whether or not the Gemini app integration is available. Notebook creation, source upload, Audio Overview, and conversation features are all available on the free plan.
| Feature | NotebookLM Free | Gemini Advanced |
|---|---|---|
| Access to notebooklm.google.com | Available | Available |
| Notebook creation & source upload | Available | Available |
| Audio Overview | Available | Available |
| Gemini app integration | Not available | Available |
| Save sources directly mid-conversation | Not available | Available |
| Real-time sync | Not available | Available |
Recommendations by Use Case
If research is part of daily work, Gemini Advanced delivers real value. When first diving into a new topic, the flow of quickly getting background information from Gemini and immediately building it into a notebook feels natural. Removing tab switching is a bigger difference than it sounds.
If you only occasionally use a research tool, free NotebookLM is plenty. Source upload, Audio Overview, and citation-grounded conversation are all free. If switching between two separate services feels fine, there's no real reason to upgrade.
| Situation | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Research is part of daily work | Gemini Advanced | Collect and save without switching tabs |
| Want to listen to long documents | NotebookLM Free | Audio Overview is available for free |
| Deep analysis of papers or technical docs | NotebookLM Free | Dedicated site is better for editing and citations |
| Already subscribed to Gemini | Try the integration now | Improve workflow at no extra cost |
| Want to consolidate to one AI subscription | Gemini Advanced | Combines NotebookLM + Gemini + Google Workspace |
Who Actually Benefits
Most useful for people who regularly handle papers, technical documentation, and long reports. Developers can search API specs or RFC documents in Gemini and accumulate them directly into a notebook. Vibe-coders who aren't developers can use it to gather context from multiple AI tools into one place.
Also useful for students and researchers. Collecting class materials, lecture recordings, and reference papers into a single notebook lets you handle exam prep or presentation prep entirely within NotebookLM. This use case was popular even before the Gemini integration.
On the other hand, there's no real reason to use NotebookLM for quick searches or one-off questions. Gemini or other AI chatbots are enough for that. NotebookLM's strength is source accumulation. Its real value shows when you ask repeated questions within the same set of sources.
Limitations and Reality
The integration doesn't mean the features are now identical. Notebook editing, source organization, and citation verification are still more comfortable on notebooklm.google.com. The integration in the Gemini app is focused on collection and quick access.
Requiring a Gemini Advanced subscription is also a real constraint. Free users do not get the integration features. NotebookLM itself is free, but the connection to Gemini sits behind a paid plan.
Honestly, using the two services separately isn't that inconvenient either. How much tab switching bothers you varies from person to person. If you're already on Gemini Advanced, this is a worthwhile feature. If you're not, it's not a strong enough reason to subscribe on its own.
If you're on Gemini Advanced, splitting the two services by role is the practical approach.
— Gemini app: exploring information, quick questions, collecting sources → saving to notebook
— notebooklm.google.com: organizing sources, deep analysis, citation verification, Audio Overview editing
On the free plan, just use the two services separately. If tab switching doesn't bother you, there's no reason to upgrade.
FAQ
Q. What happens to existing NotebookLM free users?
notebooklm.google.com continues to operate as a free service. The integration features inside the Gemini app are offered first to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Nothing changes for free users' existing features.
Q. What happens to existing notebook data?
Everything stays intact. Existing notebooks are accessible from the Gemini app in exactly the same way. No data migration or reset is needed. If you're logged into your Google account, it connects automatically.
Q. Are NotebookLM and Gemini becoming a single service?
Not a full merger. notebooklm.google.com remains a separate standalone site. This is an integration that lets you access NotebookLM features from within the Gemini app. The two services maintain their own UIs while sharing data.
Q. Can I use Audio Overview in Gemini too?
Yes. Audio Overview — the feature that summarizes your sources as a podcast-style conversation — can now be launched from within the Gemini app. Sources collected in Gemini can be turned into an Audio export without leaving the app.
Q. Is English supported?
Any language supported by Gemini is supported here. English is included. Both sources and conversations are handled in English.
Closing Thoughts
If you're already using NotebookLM, the Gemini integration is worth trying right away. Just eliminating the back-and-forth between two tabs has value in itself. Not breaking the research flow is a bigger difference than it sounds.
If you don't have a Gemini Advanced subscription, keep using notebooklm.google.com. There's no difference in features. If the convenience of integration is making you consider subscribing, check your research frequency first. If you use it daily, the investment is worth it. If you use it occasionally, free is enough.
